The Victoria Falls is thundering better than in a long time, after good rains along the Zambezi River, even though there are no tourists to see the magnificent sight.

According to the Chronicle in Bulawayo, as of Friday water levels in the feeder Zambezi River measured at Chavuma, Zambia, had gone up 523 percent compared to the same period last year. From the falls the waters continue on to Lake Kariba.

“The Zambezi River Authority (ZRA) yesterday said water levels were trending above the long-term average, and the highest in 20 years,” the paper said. The falls are nicknamed Mosi-oa-Tunya; which means ‘The smoke that thunders.’

The Herald reported today that the Victoria Falls had closed yesterday, as part of the countrywide lockdown, and by then tourists numbered only 10 a day versus up to 1,000 a day normally.
